The project was established in 2001 by people from Trinity
Methodist / URC church who had a vision to bring together young people in the
churches across Leek and the surrounding villages for encouragement and cross
church events. It was decided early on that the project should be strongly
ecumenical - involving as many denominations as possible, therefore when the
Management Committee was put together it included representatives from many
different churches in Leek. To reflect this, the project was named the Leek + District
Ecumenical Youth Work Project. In 2004 the Project's Constitution was formalised and it became a Registered Charity (Registration Number: 1104221) under the name: The Leek and District Churches Youth Work Project. This formal title is a bit of a mouthful so it was about this time that we adopted the working name of 'Synapse'. This is the gap between nerve cells across which messages are passed, reflecting the job we felt we were called to do of working in the gaps.
The Management Committee consists of representatives from our sponsoring churches, Trinity Church, The Anglican Churches of the Parish of Leek and Meerbrook, Leek Pentecostal Church and Endon Methodist Chapel, who act as The Trustees of the Charity, currently under the Chairmanship of Rev Richard Pope of Trinity Church.
